Malacañang: Roque Must Face Charges, Can't Hide Behind Asylum
Palace to Former Spokesperson Roque: You Can't Hide Behind Asylum Request
Malacañang Palace has issued a firm statement regarding former presidential spokesperson Harry Roque's request for political asylum in the Netherlands, asserting that this action cannot shield him from a valid arrest warrant issued in the Philippines.
Roque, who is facing an arrest warrant for his alleged involvement in a Philippine offshore gaming operation (POGO) hub in Pampanga, recently stated his intention to continue pursuing political asylum.
Presidential Communications Undersecretary Claire Castro addressed the issue directly in a press briefing. She emphasized that Roque bears the responsibility of proving that the legal actions against him constitute mere harassment.
"Roque filed his petition for asylum. So, to avoid arrest, especially since our country has issued a valid warrant of arrest, it is his responsibility to prove that any attempt to bring him back to the Philippines, whether through Interpol or cooperation with Interpol, is due to mere harassment," Undersecretary Castro stated.
She further clarified that a request for asylum does not automatically grant immunity from legal processes. "It's not a statement that he cannot be arrested just like that. If there is a valid warrant of arrest and he has a case he needs to face, he should not hide behind his petition for asylum."
When questioned about Roque's claim that the arrest warrant is politically motivated due to his past association with Duterte, Undersecretary Castro retorted, questioning the basis for such an assertion. "And whatever he is saying about his alleged hidden wealth is not even being addressed. So how could there be political persecution?" she challenged.
The Palace's statement underscores the government's stance that legal obligations must be met and that the pursuit of political asylum cannot be used as a means to evade legitimate legal proceedings. The burden of proof now lies with Mr. Roque to demonstrate the alleged harassment he claims to be facing. The situation remains closely monitored as developments unfold regarding the execution of the arrest warrant and Roque's asylum application in the Netherlands.
