Usapang Kape't Gatas: Binay Signals Willingness to Engage Taguig on Contested Areas, Assets
Nancy Binay Open to Dialogue with Taguig Amidst Territorial Dispute
Makati City Mayor-elect Nancy Binay has expressed her willingness to engage in dialogue with Taguig City Mayor Lani Cayetano to resolve the long-standing territorial dispute between the two highly urbanized cities. This comes as Binay prepares to assume her new role, emphasizing the need for open communication to ensure a smooth transition and address the ongoing challenges related to the Supreme Court's decision on the contested "EMBO" barangays.
"Actually, there's still a lot we need to discuss because there is no writ of execution yet, and there are Makati City assets that are currently in Taguig," Binay stated in a recent interview. She underscored the importance of fostering good relations between the two cities, acknowledging the complexities of the dispute that saw ten barangays, including Fort Bonifacio and the Bonifacio Global City complex, transferred to Taguig's jurisdiction by a Supreme Court ruling.
Binay conveyed optimism for a productive discussion, stating, "I am more than willing to talk to her," referring to Mayor Cayetano. The transition of jurisdiction and assets remains a key point of discussion, with Makati having previously sought a status quo order and guidelines for the implementation of the Supreme Court's decision.
As Binay prepares for her term, her commitment to dialogue signals a potential path towards a more amicable resolution of the territorial issue, aiming to ensure that residents in the affected areas continue to receive proper social services and that the prosperity of both cities is maintained.
